White vs Reds
Western Rock Lobsters vary in colour from a light creamy white, to brick red right through to a dark purple-blackish colour. |

There are also seasonal variations in colour, with the juvenile newly moulted lobsters taking on a lighter "white" colour before maturity and their migration out to deeper waters.
Originally thought to be a separate species, the "whites" as they are referred to are the main source of the catch in the first part of the season.
Following migration, the lobsters grow and moult, taking on a darker colour on maturity, and are then known as "reds", with the peak catch of reds occurring around March-April each year. |
